The Last Raider Sailor

Looking Back at 105: Aboard the HSK Kormoran

Günther Polzin,

written down by

Adrian Matthes

Over the course of nearly five years of war Günther Polzin traveled many tens of thousands of nautical miles aboard more than seven different ships. His service in the Kriegsmarine took him to the remotest corners of the world’s oceans and became the defining experience of his life. Yet what remained in memory were not only the adventures of a young seafarer, but also the names of those young people who found a cold, wet grave at the bottom of the sea. Günther Polzin was a soldier who never wanted to be one. He did not wear his medals with pride and was one of the few of his age group who did not conform to the system of the time. Today, he can report from the perspective of an opponent of National Socialism and provide a wealth of insights into the oppositional Protestant youth work in Berlin in the 1930s.
