As a pioneer with the 16th SS Division "Reichsführer SS".

A former SS leader recalls his youth

Dr. Fritz Geißdörfer, written down by Adrian Matthes

At the age of 98, Dr. Fritz Geißdörfer can look back on a long and eventful life. As a young man, he himself took on leadership positions in the Jungvolk. At 17, he volunteered for the Waffen SS and was promoted to Untersturmführer in record time. In 1944, he was finally sent to the front in Italy as a platoon leader. There he experienced the fighting around Pisa and the retreat through northern Italy with the "Reichsführer SS" division. Badly wounded, he returned home and spent the last months of the war in Dresden. On May 8, he narrowly escaped the Red Army, went into hiding and began an adventurous flight through Germany that lasted almost three years.

This authentic eyewitness account provides an insight into a division that has been little documented to date. Even though Dr. Geißdörfer was only in frontline action for a relatively short time, he has exciting experiences to tell you about. These include the use of the leaning tower of Pisa as a fire control center or the use of the "Stuka on foot" rockets.
