Heinz Goertzen grew up in West Prussia and today, as a witness to more than a century of history, recounts the story of his extraordinary life. After graduating from high school, he did not get to pursue his intended studies in aircraft engineering, but was instead drafted into the Reichsarbeitsdienst and eventually into the Luftwaffe. Rather than sitting in a lecture hall, Goertzen found himself in the skies over the Eastern Front, serving as a radio operator aboard a Heinkel 111. During his 174 combat missions – initially flying in large formations and later on night flights – he experienced aerial combat firsthand and was eventually shot down himself. Awarded the Iron Cross First Class and the Luftwaffe Honor Goblet, his career as a combat aircrewman came to an end in 1944, and he spent the final days of the war in “Sonderkommando Elbe.” After the war, he served with the U.S. Armed Forces and eventually built his civilian career working for the postal service.
